Panchakarma Therapy for Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is an aggressive, fast-growing malignancy of the blood and bone marrow characterized by the rapid proliferation of immature myeloid precursor cells, or myeloblasts. Under normal conditions, blast cells constitute less than 5% of bone marrow, but in AML, they typically exceed 20%, effectively crowding out healthy red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. While AML can occur at any age, it is predominantly a disease of older adults, with a global median age at diagnosis between 65 and 70 years.

AML accounts for about 1% of all new cancer diagnoses and almost 1% of cancer-related mortality worldwide, statistically. The international incidence rate is estimated at 4 to 5 cases per 100,000 people per year, with risk rising dramatically in those over age 60. The incidence of leukemia in Indian clinical setting is reported to be between 2.5 to 6 per 100,000 population with median age of onset usually significantly younger, often cited around 40 years. Although 5-year relative survival has increased over recent decades to approximately 30% to 33%, prognosis remains highly dependent on particular genetic mutations (eg, FLT3, NPM1, and CEBPA) and the patient’s ability to tolerate intensive therapy.
