Mouth and oral cancer are important health concerns in Varanasi and other parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh. According to data from the Varanasi Population-Based Cancer Registry (PBCR), started by Tata Memorial Centre, mouth and tongue cancers are among the common cancers seen in men. The first report from the registry found that the overall cancer rate was 59.2 cases per 100,000 men and 52.1 cases per 100,000 women.
