Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is one of the aggressive cancers of the blood and bone marrow characterized by the rapid proliferation of abnormal myeloid precursor cells. These immature or leukemic cells accumulate in the bone marrow, impairing the production of normal red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. AML can occur at any age but is more common in adults and older individuals.

In India, AML accounts for approximately 10–15% of all leukemia cases and represents 80–90% of acute leukemias in adults. The disease is more common in males and its incidence increases with age. Population-based studies suggest that AML contributes significantly to leukemia-related mortality and disability in India.

Specific data on the incidence of AML in Pune are lacking. However, Indian cancer registries show that leukemia is among the important hematological malignancies in the area. The Pune cancer registry estimated the annual incidence of childhood leukemia to be 21.9 per million boys and 9.5 per million girls. This indicates a significant burden of leukemia in the city.

C) Nagabala Rasayana in the Management of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

Nagabala Rasayana is a classical Ayurvedic rejuvenative therapy described in the Rasayana section of the Ayurvedic texts. It involves the regular administration of properly collected and processed roots of Nagabala (Grewia hirsuta / Sida veronicaefolia, depending on regional identification) with milk, honey, and ghee, followed by a nourishing diet of Shali and Shashtika rice.

In Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) patients Nagabala Rasayana can be used as supportive Ayurvedic intervention for improving strength, nourishment and tissue regeneration. Fatigue, weakness, weight loss, reduced immunity and depletion of bodily tissues are common in AML patients due to the disease itself and from intensive treatments such as chemotherapy. The anabolic, strength-promoting and rejuvenative properties of Nagabala may help improve overall vitality, support recovery, maintain body weight and enhance quality of life.

D) Dvipanchamuladi Niruha Vasti in the Management of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

Dvipanchamuladi Niruha Vasti is a traditional Ayurvedic decoction enema described by Acharya Charaka, primarily indicated for the management of various disorders. Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) generally suffers from vata predominance due to disease progression, chemotherapy-induced debility, weight loss, fatigue, muscle wasting, weakness, pain, constipation, and tissue depletion (Dhatu Kshaya). The Dashamula group possesses Vata-pacifying, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and restorative properties, while Bala and Guduchi contribute to strengthening, immunomodulation, and Rasayana effects. The inclusion of goat meat soup, ghee, oil, and vasa provides nourishment and supports recovery in debilitated individuals.
