Colon Cancer typically originates from the polyps which is sessile or pedunculated in nature. Most of the polyps is benign in nature and originates in the inner layer of colon. Some polyps may accumulate additional mutation and may have a cancerous transformation.

Colon Cancer is staged based on its spread – from Stage 0 to Stage IV. This stage ranges from when cancer cells is confined to the inner lining of the colon till it has spread to distant organs like the liver, lungs etc. so let see, what is the survival rate for colon cancer .

What is the survival rate for colon cancer?

Survival rate from the colon cancer varies on several factors which includes the stage of the cancer at the time diagnosis, the overall health of the patient, and his response to the treatment. Generally for cancer survival rates is measured as a 5-year relative survival rate, which mean that percentage of people alive after diagnosis compared to general population.

Colon Cancer Survival Rates by Stage:

Further is mentioned approximate breakdown of the 5-year survival rate of the colon cancer:

1) Stage 1: Around 90% – Stage I is designated when cancer cells in localized within the colon. Survival rates is generally high if treatment is initiated at the earliest and the patients responds well.

2) Stage II: Around 70 – 85% – Stage II is designated when cancer cells has invaded and grown into or through the outer layers of the colon but has not spread to the nearby lymph nodes. Treatment is generally effective and cure can be achieved by excision of the affected colon.

3) Stage III: Around 40 – 70% – Stage III is designated when cancer cells has spread to the nearby lymph nodes but not to the distant organs. Treatment may be still effective at this stage of cancer but survival is generally decreased.

4) Stage IV: Around 10 – 15% – Stage IV is designated when cancer cells has spread to the distant organs like liver or lungs etc. Prognosis is generally low or poor in the Stage of the Cancer but treatment can be directed toward extending life and improving quality of life of the patient.

Factors that influence the survival:

1) Early detection: Colon Cancer can be detected early through screening methods like colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy etc. Periodic screening in high risk group can help in early detection and can lead to improves survival in colon cancer patients.

2) Age and Health: Younger peoples are healthier as compared to cardio-respiratory point of view and so can tolerate the treatment better.
