Breast Cancer Treatment

Breast cancer recurrence is one of the greatest concerns for both patients and oncologists. Even after successful chemotherapy, some patients can experience a return of the breast cancer, which can warrant further treatment.

This case study highlights the journey of a 44-year-old woman with recurrent breast cancer who chose Ayurvedic treatment under the guidance of Dr. Ravi Gupta before undergoing surgery. The post-operative pathology revealed encouraging findings, making this an important documented clinical case.

Patient History

The patient was initially diagnosed with left breast cancer and underwent chemotherapy approximately two years earlier (2023). After a period of remission, she developed a local recurrence in the left breast.

Her Whole-Body PET CT Scan done on 30th April, 2025 revealed: 1) There is increase in metabolic activity without obvious change in size of lower outer quadrant left breast mass lesion infiltrating skin and reaching upto nipple areolar complex measuring about 3.3 x 2.4 cm with SUV max of 3.32 (previously SUV max of 1.87). Lesion does not reach upto pectoralis muscle. 2) Sub cm left axillary nodes without significant metabolic activity with SUV max of 0.83 (previously SUV max of 0.55). – unchanged. 3) No size significant or abnormal FDG avid left supraclavicular, internal mammary lymph nodes noted.

Instead of proceeding directly to further allopathic treatment, she consulted Dr. Ravi Gupta, an experienced Ayurveda Cancer Consultant, and underwent a personalized Ayurvedic treatment program. During this period, she was closely monitored.

Subsequently, she underwent breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy with axillary clearance) to remove the remaining lesion.

Surgical Findings

The surgery successfully removed the breast tumor along with axillary lymph nodes for pathological examination.

The excised breast lesion measured approximately 3.5 × 3 × 3 cm, with significant areas of tissue breakdown (necrosis) visible on gross examination, suggesting substantial changes within the tumor before surgery.

Histopathology Revealed Encouraging Findings

Microscopic examination of the surgical specimen demonstrated several positive pathological features.

A) Significant Tumor Necrosis was noted.

B) The pathologist reported that a considerable portion of the tumor consisted of necrosis, inflammation, and healing changes, with only residual viable tumor cells identified. These findings indicate that much of the tumor tissue had undergone destruction before surgical removal.

C) Complete Tumor Removal

D) One of the most reassuring findings was that the surgical margins were completely free of cancer, meaning the tumor had been entirely removed during surgery.

What Makes This Case Significant?

This patient’s journey is noteworthy because she had:

A) Previous chemotherapy for breast cancer.

B) Local recurrence after initial treatment.

C) Ayurvedic treatment under the care of Dr. Ravi Gupta.

Subsequent surgery demonstrating:

A) Extensive tumor necrosis.

B) Clear surgical margins.

C) No lymph node involvement (0/17).

d) No lymphovascular invasion.

E) No perineural invasion.

The pathology findings document an encouraging response in the residual tumor present at the time of surgery. While the pathology report itself describes these as treatment-related changes and does not identify the specific cause, this case represents the clinical outcome observed following the patient’s course of Ayurvedic treatment before surgery.
