Leukemia is a broad term for cancers of the blood cells or blood-forming tissues, such as the bone marrow. It starts in the bone marrow, the spongy tissue inside your bones where blood cells (white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets) are made.

In leukemia, the bone marrow produces a large number of abnormal white blood cells (leukemia cells) and these cells don’t function properly. These abnormal cells build up in the blood and bone marrow, crowding out healthy blood cells. This prevents the body from making enough healthy white blood cells (to fight infection), red blood cells (to carry oxygen), and platelets (to clot blood).

What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma is one of the most effective detoxification modalities mentioned in Ayurveda. It helps in removing Ama (undigested food material or toxins) from the body. It also helps to restore delicate balance among the Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and restore the body’s natural healing power.

The 5 main procedures of Panchakarma are:

1) Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis): It is characterized by induced vomiting to remove excess Kapha from the stomach and chest.

2) Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation): It is characterized by controlled purgation to eliminate excess Pitta from the liver and intestines.

3) Basti (Medicated Enema): In this procedure herbal decoctions/oils are given rectally to balance Vata.

4) Nasya (Nasal Detox): It is characterized by instillation of medicated oils through the nose to detox the head, sinuses, and brain region.

5) Raktamokshana (Bloodletting): It consist of purification of blood using leech therapy or other methods.

How Panchakarma proves beneficial in Blood Cancer or Leukemia Patients

1) Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation) in treatment of Blood Cancer or Leukemia Patients

Virechana, a core Panchakarma therapy in Ayurveda, is derived from the components Vi (prefix), Rich (root meaning evacuation or separation), and Lut (suffix indicating action). In clinical practice, Virechana specifically denotes evacuation of dustha doshas or therapeutic purgation through the lower gastrointestinal tract.

As described by Charaka, Virechana medicines are first absorbed into the body, then circulate through the heart and various body channels called Dhamanis, reaching sites where Doshas are accumulated. They soften compacted toxins, break larger molecules into smaller ones, and guide them into the intestines for expulsion.

Majja Dhatu is one of the seven fundamental tissues of an individual, as mentioned in Ayurveda and it closely corresponds to bone marrow in the body. It fills the cavities of bones and is responsible for nourishing the nervous system, producing immunity, and supporting the formation of healthy blood cells.

Majja Dhatu plays a crucial role in strength, vitality, mental stability, and hematopoiesis in an individual and when it is depleted or impaired it leads to anemia, leukopenia, or bone-marrow–related disorders.
