Leukemia is a type of blood cancer that originates in the blood-forming tissues, primarily the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. Normally in a healthy body, bone marrow produces white blood cells which is one of the crucial aspects of an individual immune and defense mechanism, red blood cells to carry oxygen, and platelets to help blood clot.
When leukemia develops, the bone marrow produces an excessive amount of abnormal white blood cells that don’t function correctly. These “leukemic or abnormal” cells eventually crowd out the healthy cells, making it difficult for the blood to do its job.
