What causes breast cancer?

The breast is a specialized organ that is present or located on the chest of both men and women. Breast are most developed in females compared to males. Breast is primarily composed of glandular tissue, fatty tissue, connective tissue, blood tissue, and lymphatic vessels.

The primary organ of breast is to produce milk during lactation in women. Breast in males is non-functional in nature and doesn’t produce milk. Common conditions affecting breast are benign conditions like fibroadenoma, cysts etc, and malignant condition like breast cancer.

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a type of cancer in which the breast cells grow uncontrollably thereby forming tumor. These tumor mass or cancer cells further invade or spread to surrounding tissues. These cancer cells can also spread to distant organs.

Breast cancer primarily affects women but in small percentage males are also affected. Early detection and management of breast cancer can significantly improve long term prognosis in colon cancer.

Causes of Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer occurs due to uncontrolled growth of cells in different breast tissues. The exact cause of breast cancer is still not well established but there are several factors that can cause or predispose an individual to increased risk of developing breast cancer.

1) Genetic Factors:

  1. Inherited Mutations: Mutations in genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 can significantly increase the risk or predisposition of developing breast cancer.
  2. Family History: History of first-degree relatives with breast cancer can significantly predispose an individual to risk of developing breast cancer.

2) Hormonal Factors:

  1. Estrogen Exposure: Exposure to estrogen for prolonged time such as early menstruation (before the age of 12), and late menopause (after the age of 55), can raise the risk of breast cancer. Prolonged exposure to hormone is also encountered during hormone replacement therapy.
  2. Reproductive History: Women’s conceiving after the age of 30 years may also increase the risk breast cancer.
3) Lifestyle Factors: 
  1. Diet and Obesity: Diet high in fat and obesity, especially after menopause, can predispose an individual to increased risk of breast cancer.
  2. Alcohol Consumption: Excessive consumption of alcohol can also increase the risk of breast cancer.
4) Environmental Factors: 
  1. Radiation Exposure: Prior exposure to ionizing radiation during certain medical treatments can increase the risk of breast cancer.
  2. Toxins: Exposure to certain chemicals during workplace or at home environment can also increase the risk of breast cancer.
5) Age and Gender:
  1. Age: Individuals above the age of 50 years are at an increased risk of breast cancer.
  2. Gender: Women are at a much higher risk of developing breast cancer than men’s.

6) Ethnicity:

Some ethnic groups, such as Ashkenazi Jewish populations, have a higher prevalence of BRCA mutations.

7) Dense breast tissue:

Women with dense breast are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer in the future.
