Breast cancer is a type of cancer that forms in the cells of the breast. It occurs when cells of the breast acquire certain genetic mutations and these abnormal breast cells begins to grow uncontrollably thereby forming lump or a tumor. These lump or tumor can be visualized on mammogram. Breast cancer can affect both men and women, although it is less common in men.
Obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking, lack of physical activity etc. can contribute to predisposition of developing breast cancer. Certain hereditary genetic mutations like BRCA1, BRCA2, p53 etc. can also be a causative factor for developing breast cancer.
What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma is one the important treatment modality in breast cancer and is popularly known as shodhana chikitsa in Ayurveda. It helps to detoxify and rejuvenate the body of breast cancer patients. Panchakarma helps to remove toxins from the body, restore balance of the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), and help to improve overall health and well-being of an individual. The five main therapies in Panchakarma is:
1) Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis): Vamana means a procedure of induced vomiting and removing toxins from upper part of the body. Vamana primarily help to balance Kapha Dosha that is the main causative factor behind breast cancer.
2) Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation): Virechana is procedure of controlled purgation and proves beneficial in clearing toxins from lower part of the body. Virechana primarily help in balancing Pitta dosha.
3) Basti (Medicated Enema): Basti procedure means using medicated oils or decoction to cleanse the dustha doshas from the body and further balance Vata dosha. Basti is one of the most effective treatment modality to cleanse the colon and balance vata dosha in the body.
4) Nasya (Nasal Administration): Nasya involves instillation of medicated oils, powders, or juice extract through the nose. It helps to cleanse the dustha or impure doshas from the urdhava jatrugata area or the region above clavicular bone. Nose or Nasa is called gateway to cleanse the doshas of the head.
5) Raktamokshana (Bloodletting): Raktamokshana or Bloodletting involves removal of small amount of blood to detoxify the body and manage disorders that are caused by impure blood. Raktamokshana can be done with help of leech or through venepuncture also.
How Panchakarma does helps in Breast Cancer?

If Breast Cancer has metastasized to distant organs then surgery is not so viable option, so chemotherapy or immunotherapy is planned. Prior to starting chemotherapy or immunotherapy Vamana can be planned for better results.

2) Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation) in the treatment of Breast Cancer Patients: Virechana Karma can help to reduce and eliminate excessive heat (ushnata) and impure pitta dosha (dustha dosha) from the body of breast cancer patients that is generated during treatment like Radiotherapy or Chemotherapy. Virechana Karma also helps breast cancer patients in dealing with constipation and various digestive disorders.
If we want to treat Breast Cancer based on Ayurvedic Principles then Bhallatak Milk Formula is one of the mode of treatment. For Bhallatak Milk Formula Kostha shuddhi is important. So for Kostha Shuddhi nothing is as better than Virechana.
3) Raktamokshana (Blood Letting) in the treatment of Breast Cancer Patients: If the breast area is inflamed due to the cancer or the patient is suffering from pain then Raktamokshana proves beneficial in such conditions.
4) Basti (Medicated Enema) in the treatment of Breast Cancer Patients: If Breast Cancer disease is at advanced stages and the patient has lost good amount of weight or is emaciated then Yapana Basti can prove a significant role in gaining back the vitality.
If Cancer has metastasized to the bone and the patient is suffering from bone pain, then Panchatiktha Kshir Basti can play a significant role in alleviating the pain.
