Types of colorectal cancer:
1) Colon Cancer: Cancer that originates in the colon is called colon cancer. Colon is large part of the intestine and helps to absorbs water and nutrients from the digested food material.
2) Rectal Cancer: Cancer that originates in the rectum is called rectal cancer. Rectum stores the stool until defecation.
Colorectal Cancer is typically classified from Stage 0 (Early Stage) to Stage IV (Advanced Stage). In advanced stage or Stage IV cancer, cancer cells has spread to the distant organs. The staging of the colon cancer depends upon how deep the cancer cells has penetrated the walls of the colon or if it has spread to the lymph nodes or not.
Can colon cancer come back after treatment?
Yes, colon cancer can recur after treatment. Recurrence of colon cancer depends of multiple factors which includes the stage at which the cancer has been diagnosed, the treatment modalities offered to the patient, and individual health factors.
Recurrence of colon cancer is highest during first year of the treatment completion, and the risk of colon cancer drops after two years and after five years if there is no recurrence then the patient is declared cancer free. Chances of recurrences remains because some cancer cells might remain undetected due to micro-metastasis and some time it may grow back causing relapse.
Post completion of the treatment screening of relapse is done every 03rd month for initial 2 years with Colonoscopy and Whole Body PET CT Scan. If no relapse is detected within initial 2 years, then screening is done every 6 months from 03rd year to 05th year. And further if no relapse is detected till 5 years. The patient is declared cancer free after 5 years.
