What is Breast?
The breast is the prominent feature of the female body and is a complex structure that is located on the chest. Though men also have breasts, but it is less developed due to lower levels of estrogen hormone. Breast is an important aspect of the human body, particularly in females and plays an important role in reproductive and sexual health of females.
Breast consists of milk-producing glands and ducts that carries milk to the nipple. This function of breast is called lactation and helps in producing milk that helps to feed the infant. Nipple is the protruding part of the breast and helps to deliver milk till the mouth of the infant. One of the most important concern regarding health of the breast is “Breast Cancer”. Breast Cancer can develop in the glands, ducts or other parts of the breasts.
What is Breast Cancer?
Breast Cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the breast and form a lump or a tumor. Breast Cancer is a type of disease in which certain cells in the breast starts growing uncontrollably and don’t die further, thereby forming lump of tumor. Cancer can start in the ducts that carries the milk to the nipple or in the glands that produces the milk.
Not all lumps in the breast are cancerous but some are benign (non-cancerous lump). The commonest and mostly misinterpreted as cancerous lump in breast is “Fibroadenoma”. Fibroadenoma is easily moveable and typically affects younger females, most commonly between the ages of 15 and 35.
What causes Breast Cancer?
Causative factor behind breast cancer is still not well known but can be caused by combination of multitude of factors like genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Several risk identified are mentioned below:
1) Genetic Factors: It is well known fact that about 5 – 10 % of breast cancer are hereditary and most often mutation in the genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 are involved.
2) Lifestyle Factors: Excessive consumption of diet rich in fatty acids, obesity, and lack of physical activity can increase the risk of breast cancer.
3) Age: The risk of breast cancer increases as the age advances and most cases is seen in females above the age of 50 years.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer can present with variety of symptoms but some symptoms are mentioned below:
1) A lump or mass in the breast or underarm is the most common symptom of breast cancer. This mass or lump can be painless and gradually increases in size.
2) Discharge from the nipple can be a sign of breast cancer. The discharge can be clear or bloody.
